Meet Dr. Jessica Nelson
Hi, I'm Dr. Jessica Nelson.
I’m a board-certified emergency medicine physician, medical director, and advocate for accessible, equitable healthcare. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of caring for patients in some of their most vulnerable moments — inside emergency departments, industrial worksites, and communities across Houston and beyond.
My training and experience have taught me how to move quickly, think critically, and make life-saving decisions. But more importantly, they’ve shown me the gaps that still exist in our healthcare system — especially when it comes to access, trust, and representation.
The idea for The Black Doctor Resource came from both my professional experience and my personal reality.
I’ve seen patients delay care because they didn’t feel heard. I’ve had friends and family ask, “Do you know a good Black doctor?” I’ve watched people struggle to find providers they feel comfortable with — providers who understand their lived experiences, communicate clearly, and build trust from the very first visit.
This platform was created to help bridge that gap.
Not because Black patients can only be cared for by Black physicians — but because access to culturally competent care, representation, and choice matters. Everyone deserves to feel seen, respected, and understood in their healthcare journey.
The Black Doctor Resource is about connection. It’s about empowerment. It’s about making it easier to find physicians across specialties who are not only highly qualified, but also deeply committed to serving their communities.
My hope is that this resource becomes more than just a directory. I want it to be a tool that helps people make informed decisions, ask better questions, and ultimately take ownership of their health.
